Former Mayor of Matale Daljith Aluwihare says he will seek legal action challenging the move to remove him from the post of Mayor.
The Governor of the Central Province Lalith U Gamage issued an Extraordinary Gazette Notification, removing Daljith Aluwihare from his post as Mayor of the Matale Municipal Council effective yesterday.
Aluwihare said the move is politically motivated and vowed to resort to legal action.
He pointed out that such a decision can only be reached by a Chief Minister and not a Governor.
The Governor was suspended from his duties for three months following a complaint filed against him by the Deputy Mayor and other Municipal Councillors.
The measure was reached under provisions granted to the Central Province Governor under the Municipal Council Act.
Matale Deputy Mayor Sandanam Prakash has accordingly been vested with power to carry out the Mayor’s duties and exercise Mayoral authority in this regard.
